Cape Lazo Middle School - Comox, BC

Blair Pettis acted as Owner's Representative and Project Manager on behalf of School District 71 Comox Valley for the $7 million Middle School. Completed in 2001, this project required land assembly, road dedication removal, and off site services and road construction in addition to the 4,700 sq m school.

Designed by CJP Architects, the project includes classrooms, gymnasium, music room, multi purpose room, science labs, carpentry shops and computer labs.

The project's major innovation was to use tilt-up concrete construction to provide a robust, impervious building envelop. The design was developed to be re-used in two other sites to achieve economies of scale. The facility is fully networked with high-tech data and communications systems. Building systems are digitally controlled heating and ventilation units with gas-fired boilers. Industrial task ventilation systems were utilized in the industrial and laboratory areas. Site works included, in addition to the utilities and road construction, an all-weather sports field.
